Marybeth Abraham â⬠Biography Essay Womens Studies (300 Level Course)
Marybeth Abraham ââ¬â Biography Essay Womens Studies (300 Level Course) Free Online Research Papers Marybeth Abraham ââ¬â Biography Essay Womenââ¬â¢s Studies (300 Level Course) Open any historical text and one will find in bold face and color photos, the men and women that have shaped a nation. Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King Jr., each of these names signals in the minds and hearts of the American people a recognition of time and space; a picture of the places where these people made history and the emotions that their actions incite. However, does not the Constitution sing praise to the importance of each and every individual? Has society as historian overlooked the lives of everyday heroes such as elders, parents, and the young? Every human is historically significant, and one in particular, Marybeth Abraham, exemplifies this belief. Marybethââ¬â¢s conscientious acknowledgement of this nationââ¬â¢s economy, nationalistic ties, social and political advancements, and historical events throughout the decades, combined with her dedication toward civic leadership and contributions as a mother, qualify her not only as a proud citizen, but also as positive proof that it is often the unsung hero who shapes everyday events into American History. Marybeth Abraham, born Mary Elizabeth Hood, is the mother of six and wife of Don. Born July 5, 1921 in Mallard, Iowa, a mere 400 in population; Marybeth dreamed of life beyond her modest and struggling childhood. Her rich religious background and innate love for people helped her through what she calls the historical event that had the greatest impact on her life: WWII. It is then she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. Marybeth had several paying positions and one job which she humbly does not consider a career: motherhood. She worked early on as a teacher and at the post office, making money to support her family. Later, when she moved to Omaha, Nebraska, she took a job at Union Pacific Railroad, where she met Don who had just come back from fighting in the Pacific. After they married, they moved to Valentine, Nebraska where they presently live and own the Abraham Wholesale, where at the age of 79 Marybeth still works handling the companyââ¬â¢s finances and a ccounting reports. Coming from little money to managing a companyââ¬â¢s assets has sparked Marybethââ¬â¢s attention to the national economy. In the mind of Mrs. Abraham, the economic world, though still wrought with prejudices, has become more global, accepting and protecting other cultures and traditions. Citing the USââ¬â¢s economic interest in the Third World as an example, Marybeth says the economy has facilitated the rapid expansion of these countryââ¬â¢s economies as well as benefiting our own. As a result, many Americans are now slowly becoming aware of human rights violations in these countries and are seeking solutions. Her positive attitude toward the economy, however, does not extend to her attitude toward this nationââ¬â¢s patriotism. One can wonder how the once proud parents of the baby boomers reacted to the anger and retaliation of their children. According to Marybeth, the generations are becoming less and less patriotic. Even the pride that her generation felt has faded. She can only speculate that this loss of patriotism her generation feels is due to a realization of their disillusionment when they themselves were young and energetic children of the 40s. This loss of patriotism coincides with a loss of morality. Marybeth firmly and proudly answered ââ¬Å"Yes, very definitelyâ⬠to the following question: ââ¬Å"How do you feel about the culture your generation created? / Did your generation provide a society with high morals, ethical policies, etc. f or future generations? She sees no problem mixing morals and government, either. In fact, she says, ââ¬Å"We do it all the time. All laws are based on some moral issue.â⬠The morals that her generation emphasized have created an America more conducive to diversity and peace. While their morals have shaped our laws, their pursuit of knowledge certainly reinvented society. Marybeth feels that the medical advancements in particular have been phenomenal. For her, as a repeated stroke sufferer, this is an exciting time. She is wary of the moral consequences this new technology might entail, and feels that for most people her age there is a fear of getting involved in the ââ¬Å"high tech stuff.â⬠She also feels that this face-paced era of development has resulted in a loss of education for many. As a former teacher, she can not understand how one can graduate without being able to read. In her day, most everyone knew the basics: reading and writing. With all of this knowledge and experience one may be curious what Mrs. Abraham feels is her greatest contribution to the history of this nation. One could assume it is her achievements as a woman. She is successful, career-oriented, and still manages to maintain the household. However, Marybeth says she never felt hindered as a woman. Sure other women were limited professionally, but she never was. She never felt men had the upper hand. ââ¬Å"Men were very helpful to me as a woman,â⬠They gave her respect. Marybeth feels, aside from having her children, her role as a pro-life activist is her contribution to the history of this nation. For years she campaigned through the state of Nebraska, exercising her first amendment rights. She even attended the 1980 Democratic Convention in NYC as a delegate from Nebraska. Oddly, she propositioned the pro-life platform to her fellow Democratic representatives. For Marybeth, morals equate into actions. This is what she believes, and this is what she continues to fight for. How does she differ from our founding fathers that fought for our nationââ¬â¢s independence because they believed so strongly in freedom? History is the study of events and personalities that have shaped our present and give us a foundation from which to make decisions concerning our future. Marybeth Abraham is one of these personalities. She has had a hand in the economy, has remained true to the flag, has tested the triumphs of technology, and has helped shape a societyââ¬â¢s political views. She is a mother and a model citizen that proves to anyone in question that is the individual who creates the words that so eloquently fill the pages of historical texts. It is hard to see this view without being forced to as with this project. Though difficult to encourage the subject to speak in depth of her contributions, it is well worth the historianââ¬â¢s time. Marybeth Abraham is triumph of American Spirit, yet she is more, she is my grandma. How to Get Rid of Chiggers in Your Yard
How to Get Rid of Chiggers in Your Yard Chiggersà measure a mere 1/150th of an inchà and so are nearly impossible to see with the human eye. But there is an easy way to sample your yard for chiggers if youre concerned about a possible chigger mite infestation. Be sure, of course, to wear appropriate clothing and repellent whenever you walk through an area that may have chiggers. Theyre also called harvest mites, harvest lice, and red bugs. What Do Chiggers Look Like? The tiny arachnids are found in a range of warm colors, from straw to yellow, to orange and red. You might see them in groups or moving on your legs (or you might see the welts from their bites). The larvae are the ones that bite; they have six legs. They dont have eight legs until theyre adult. Chigger Sampling Test Your first step, of course, should be confirming that you have a chigger infestation in your yard. If youve experienced the incessant itching ofà chigger bitesà after spending time outdoors, youll know it. But if you arent sure whether youve got chiggers or not, you can do aà quick sampling testà to confirm the offending pests are, indeed, chiggers. Before you do the test, dress preventively; otherwise, youll find the chiggers with your legs instead of your test item. Chiggers prefer moist, shady areas with thick vegetation, so focus your sampling efforts on these places in your yard. Dont bother sampling for chiggers in areas that get full sunà or where you keep the lawn mowed short. To sample your yard for chiggers, youll need one or more squares of black cardboard, each about 6 inches by 6 inches. Stand the cardboard squares on edge in areas where you suspect chiggers may be. Leave the squares in place for several minutes. Then, look closely at the cardboard. If chiggers are present, they will climb up the cardboard and gather near the top. The chiggers will be tiny and either red or yellow in color. You can also leave a shallow bowl of water in the grass for a few minutes, which will attract them as well. Look for them around the rim. You may need a magnifying glass to see them. Get Rid of Their Habitat If you find a heavy infestation of chiggers in an area of your yard, you should take steps to eliminate them. Youll definitely want to avoid walking through those areas of your yard. The best method to control chiggers is to eliminate their habitat on your property. Widespread use of pesticides to get rid of chiggers is rarely required or recommended. Again, most chiggers prefer moist, shady areas with thick vegetation. Some species do like dry areas, so keep that in mind. Prime chigger habitat includes overgrown lawns, ground covers, leaf litter, weedy areas, and densely planted shrubs or trees. Chiggers tend to cluster in certain areas becauseà the small females lay their eggs in one location. You may find an abundance of chiggers in one area and a complete lack of chiggers in an equally suitable area nearby. So how do you get rid of chiggers in your yard? Maintain a neat and tidy landscape, specifically: Mow your lawn regularly and keep it short, especially around the edges where the grass meets landscape beds or woody areas.Keep landscape beds weeded, and remove accumulated leaf litter.Trim and prune landscape plants regularly to keep them from becoming overgrown.Remove brush piles from your property.Because chiggers avoid sunny areas, eliminating shade in your yard can reduce chigger populations. If you feel you must treat your property for chiggers with pesticides, pleaseà do so responsibly and safely: Treat only areas of your yard where chiggers are confirmed to live.Dont overuse pesticides by treating your entire lawn or yard.Chigger control usually requires multiple applications of pesticides during the spring.Keep children and pets off treated areas until it has dried completely. Dont allow animals to eat treated plants.Contact your local cooperative extension office to get information about which pesticides work best for chiggers in your areaà and how to safely apply them.Always follow all directions on pesticide labels. Remember, the label is the law! Get Rid of Chiggers on You You might find the little red bumps on your legs or the bugs themselves. Especially check necklines, shirt and pant cuffs, and the tops of your socks.à If bumps or chiggers are found, wash your skin with soap and water in the bath or shower, and wash your clothes in hot water. Also, throw inà the wash any towels or blankets that touched the ground. The bumps will go away with hydrocortisone cream, allergy medication, or rarely, a steroid injection given by your doctor and antibiotics if the sores become infected.à On Your Pets and in Your House For your pets, wipe offà their face with a soft cloth or vet-recommended wipe. Longer, denserà fur should keep the rest of their body protected. If they do get bit, give them a warm bath. Seek treatments for the itching from your vet, as home remedies added to bathwater that is espoused online, may not work.à à Hot water helps rid your house of chiggers as well; clean with soapy water thats at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also use a carpet shampooer that has a heat setting.à Prevention Wear long sleeves and pants when walking in tall grass, tucking your pants into your socks, and use insect repellants. Wear thick socks and high shoes or boots. If you can stand the smell, dust your socks with sulfur powder or the inside of your shoes. Stop your hike every half hour or so and brush off the places where chiggers would congregate, at the edges of clothing. Indoors, just vacuum regularly.à Forà your pets, bathe them with soaps that contain flea and tick repellants.
